Sustainable Living Builders

California’s rainy season usually starts in October with fall rain and lasts until February. Because of this, it is very common for homeowners to worry about the integrity of their properties and the safety of their loved ones. With moderate to heavy rain lurking on the horizon, it’s perfectly reasonable for them to wonder what can be done to prepare for a storm and ensure that the inside of their property stays dry, warm, and comfortable, allowing them to enjoy the smells and sights that this season provides.

At Sustainable Living Builders, Inc. we know that the rainy season is a regular part of our customer’s lives and we aim to always provide information that not only expands their roofing knowledge but also equips them with the tools to be prepared in case of any unforeseen circumstances. That is why we want to provide you with a checklist that gives you peace of mind during one of the most beautiful seasons of the year.

  • Inspect Your Roof
Before the rainy season starts, take a walk around your property and look for damaged, missing, or misplaced shingles from your roof on the ground. If there are any signs of cracked or worn-out shingles, this is a good indicator that your roof needs some attention. If you decide to go up to your roof to take a closer look, take all the necessary precautions to prevent accidents, and always prioritize having a professional do it for you. An above-ground inspection allows you to locate worn-out flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights, which is the most common cause of water intrusion.
  • Check Your Gutters and Downspouts
Having a properly functioning drainage system allows water to flow during storms and greatly reduces the risk of leaks and water damage. Make sure you clean out any leaves and debris that might have accumulated on your gutters and downspouts, as well as any visible dirt so water can run freely. Also, check that downspouts redirect water at least a few feet away from your property to prevent any flooding. We highly recommend you consider installing gutter guards if you don’t already have them or replacing them if they are misplaced or damaged.
  • Check Your Attic Ventilation and Insulation
If you have an attic or a crawl space on your property and have access to it, it is very important to look for any signs of moisture such as damp spots, mold, or mildew it might be a strong indicator of poor ventilation or a hidden leaks. Having proper insulation guarantees that your roof is protected against moisture, regulates attic temperature, and reduces the condensation during rainy season.
  • Schedule Repairs From a Professional
If the inspections you made or had performed for you indicate that your roof shows signs of wear and tear, moisture, or is well past its lifespan, you should consider a roof replacement with a licensed contractor to make sure that you and your loved ones are safe during a storm. A roofing replacement service may appear costly at first sight but it guarantees that old shingles are replaced, proper waterproof underlayment is installed, sheathing is in top condition, and there aren’t any cracks in your chimney, vents, pipes, attic fans, or skylights. A newly installed roof makes a long-lasting, comfortable home.
  • Prepare an Emergency Supplies Kit
In case you didn’t have time to consult with a professional contractor to have a thorough inspection before the rainy season, make sure to have emergency supplies on hand to minimize damage in case of a storm. These include heavy-duty tarps to place on the roof in case shingles blow off from strong winds. Prepare buckets, plastic sheeting to protect your furniture, floor, and valuables in case of leakage, as well as patching supplies such as cement and caulking if any parts of your ventilation system present cracks from fallen tree branches or debris.
